Product Description
N-Methylmorpholine (NMM) is a versatile cyclic tertiary amine and aprotic solvent widely used as a base catalyst, pH regulator, and intermediate in pharmaceutical, agrochemical, and polyurethane industries. Thanks to its moderate basicity (pKa of conjugate acid≈7.4) and excellent solubility in both water and organic solvents, NMM is the preferred alternative to triethylamine (TEA) and N,N-dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP) in many sensitive reactions.

Peptide Synthesis:
Industry-standard base for solid-phase peptide synthesis (SPPS), especially in Fmoc/tBu strategies. Preferred coupling activator when used with HATU, HBTU, PyBOP, and COMU.
Pharmaceutical Intermediates:
Key solvent and catalyst in the production of antibiotics (e.g., cefepime, linezolid), oncology drugs, and beta-lactam derivatives.
Polyurethane Catalysts:
Blowing catalyst in flexible and rigid PU foams; offers lower odor than triethylamine.
Agrochemicals:
Used in the synthesis of herbicides, fungicides, and insecticides.
Semiconductor & Electronics:
High-purity grade used as photoresist stripper and cleaning agent.
Corrosion Inhibitors & Extraction:
Component in acid gas treatment (H₂S/CO₂ removal) and metal extraction processes.
Q: What is the difference between N-Methylmorpholine (NMM) and 4-Methylmorpholine?
A: They are the same compound. "N-Methylmorpholine" and "4-Methylmorpholine" are synonymous IUPAC names (CAS 109-02-4).
Q: Can NMM replace triethylamine (TEA) directly in my reaction?
A: In most cases yes (1:1 molar ratio). NMM provides similar basicity with significantly lower odor, better solubility in water, and reduced side reactions in peptide coupling.
Q:Does N-Methylmorpholine (NMM) react with CO₂ in air?
A:Yes, it slowly absorbs CO₂ forming a crystalline carbamate salt. Use nitrogen blanketing for long-term storage of opened containers.
Q:What is the recommended storage condition?
A:Store in a cool, well-ventilated area away from sources of ignition and strong acids. Keep containers tightly closed under inert gas when possible.
