What is trimellitic anhydride?

Trimellitic anhydride, 1,2,4-Benzenetricarboxylic anhydride. The molecular formula is C9H4O5. The appearance is white flake or powder. The melting point of trimellitic anhydride is 168℃ and the boiling point is 390℃. Trimaric anhydride dissolved in hot water and acetone, 2-J ketone, dimethylformamide, ethyl acetate, cyclohexanone. It is soluble in anhydrous ethanol and reacts, and slightly soluble in carbon tetrachloride and toluene. Trimellitic anhydride is mainly used as curing agent of epoxy resin, and can also be used in the production of plasticizer, coating, insulating paint, surfactant and so on.



The uses of trimellitic anhydride


1. The plasticizer

Triisooctyl trimelate (TOTM) is produced by esterification reaction of trimelate anhydride and 2-ethylhexanol. TOTM plasticizer has the advantages of good fluidity, heat resistance (high flash point), low volatility, high electrical properties, resistance to all kinds of solvent extraction, and small resistance to migration. It can meet the requirements of 90℃, 105℃, 125℃ grade heat resistant cable and high voltage cable plastic sheath.


2. The coating

A new water-soluble alkyd resin coating can be obtained by the reaction of trimellitic anhydride with dialcohol monoglyceride, hexanediol, propylene glycol, neopentyl glycol and other dialcohols, which can be used as electrophoretic primer for automobiles, refrigerators and washing machines.


3. Epoxy curing agent

When used as curing agent of epoxy resin, trimellitic anhydride has high reactivity and can cure epoxy resin in a short time. The solidified product has high thermal deformation temperature, excellent mechanical properties, electrical properties and drug resistance, suitable for epoxy castings and laminate products. The solid resin obtained by the reaction of trimellitic anhydride and glycerol, dissolved in solvent, has good adhesion to glass, aluminum, etc.


4. The insulating varnish

In type heat insulation paint and paint production, trimellitic anhydride used in the manufacture of polyester imide paint, modified polyester and polyamide imide lacquer paint, the product has good heat resistance, can be in the long-term use of 200 ℃ and above), wear resistance, resistance to damage, electrical insulation (breakdown voltage can reach 11.5 kV) and mechanical properties, is a class F or class H insulation varnish, It can be used as laminate resin for impregnated glass cloth, high temperature resistant covering material, insulating paint for wire and slot insulator for motor and other electrical equipment materials.


5. Surfactant

The surfactant with excellent surface activity can be prepared by mono-double esterification of trimellitic anhydride and fatty alcohols such as lauryl alcohol and octadecyl alcohol, and then the free carboxyl group on trimellitic anhydride is neutralized by NaOH.


6. Other uses

Phenylimide resin made from trimalic anhydride can be heated at 250 ~ 300℃ for a long time. It can be used to manufacture molded plastic parts such as electrical components, valves, bearings and jet engine parts. In addition, trimellitic anhydride is widely used in aviation lubricants, dyes, inks, pharmaceuticals and agricultural chemicals. Products made with anhydride are used in electric wires and cables, automobile interior decoration, artificial leather, washing machine drainage hose, blinds, handbags, sealing materials and fillers, etc.



Toxicity of trimellitic anhydride

Trimellitic anhydride is toxic and can irritate lung, eye, nasal mucosa and skin, causing allergic reactions and other disorders. The maximum allowable concentration in air is 1mg/m3. The operation site should be well ventilated, and operators should wear protective masks, protective glasses and relevant protective equipment.
