Product Description
Magnesium Oxide, commonly known as magnesia or MgO, is a white inorganic powder produced from magnesium-containing raw materials through controlled calcination.
Its alkalinity, thermal stability, reactivity and magnesium content make it suitable for environmental treatment, rubber, plastics, ceramics, refractories, construction materials, agriculture and other industrial applications.
Different Magnesium Oxide grades can have the same chemical formula but very different bulk density, particle size and reactivity.
Property | Information |
|---|---|
Product name | Magnesium Oxide |
Synonym | Magnesia |
CAS number | 1309-48-4 |
EC number | 215-171-9 |
Molecular formula | MgO |
Molecular weight | 40.30 g/mol |
Appearance | White or off-white powder |
Solubility | Practically insoluble in water; reacts with dilute acids |
Chemical type | Inorganic basic oxide |
Available grades | Light, heavy, active, dead-burned and high-purity |
Light Magnesium Oxide has relatively low bulk density and a bulky powder structure. It is selected where surface area, dispersion or higher apparent volume is important.
Heavy Magnesium Oxide has higher bulk density and generally better powder flow. It is useful where compact handling, tableting or controlled loading is required.
“Light” and “heavy” describe physical density, not necessarily product purity.
Active or caustic-calcined Magnesium Oxide is produced under controlled calcination conditions to maintain higher chemical reactivity. It is commonly evaluated for rubber, environmental treatment and specialty chemical processes.
Dead-burned magnesia has lower reactivity and greater high-temperature stability. It is primarily used in refractory bricks, furnace linings and other high-temperature materials.
High-purity grades provide controlled metallic impurities, particle size and surface properties for ceramics, electronic materials, catalysts and other demanding applications.
The product name and MgO assay alone are not sufficient for grade selection.
Specification | Why it matters |
MgO content | Indicates chemical purity or magnesium oxide concentration |
Active MgO or reactivity | Influences neutralization and reaction speed |
Bulk density | Distinguishes light and heavy grades |
Particle size or mesh | Influences dispersion, mixing and processing |
Loss on ignition | Indicates volatile matter and calcination condition |
Calcium oxide | Important for purity and refractory performance |
Silica | Important for high-temperature and ceramic applications |
Iron oxide | Influences color and high-purity applications |
Specific surface area | Relevant to active and high-dispersion grades |
Heavy metals | Important for feed, food and pharmaceutical grades |
Final limits should be confirmed through the agreed specification and batch Certificate of Analysis.
Reactive MgO can be used to neutralize acidic streams and support pH control. The required grade depends on reaction time, water chemistry and treatment equipment.
Selected active grades function as acid acceptors, curing activators or functional fillers in rubber and polymer formulations.
Dead-burned and high-purity MgO grades are used in refractory bricks, furnace linings, crucibles and technical ceramics.
Magnesium Oxide can be used in magnesium-based cement, boards, flooring and specialty construction formulations.
Approved feed or agricultural grades provide a magnesium source for animal nutrition, fertilizer and soil-treatment applications.
Only appropriately certified food or pharmaceutical grades should be used for nutritional, food-processing or medicinal applications. Industrial grades are not suitable substitutes.
Before ordering, confirm:
Required MgO content
Light or heavy grade
Required reactivity
Particle-size range
Bulk density
Maximum CaO, SiO₂ and iron limits
Intended application
Required regulatory standard
Packaging and annual quantity
Samples should be tested in the customer’s formulation or production process before changing grades.
Magnesium Oxide is commonly supplied in lined moisture-resistant bags or bulk bags. Packaging options should be confirmed during quotation.
Store the material in a cool, dry and ventilated area. Keep bags tightly closed because MgO can absorb moisture and carbon dioxide from the air.
Avoid creating airborne dust. Use suitable respiratory, eye and hand protection according to the current Safety Data Sheet.
AOZUN supports international buyers with Magnesium Oxide grade selection, specification confirmation, samples, export packaging and shipment documentation.
Available documents may include:

Regulatory documentation for the selected grade
For accurate grade selection, provide the intended application, purity, reactivity, particle size, quantity and destination country.
Magnesium Oxide is an inorganic compound and an alkaline-earth metal oxide.
Not necessarily. Light and heavy describe bulk density and powder structure rather than purity.
MgO is practically insoluble in water, but it reacts with acids and can slowly hydrate under suitable conditions.
No. Refractory, rubber, feed, food, pharmaceutical and electronic applications require different purity, density, reactivity and regulatory standards.
