What is sodium thiosulfate?

Sodium thiosulfate (sodium thiosulphate) is an inorganic compound  The solid is an efflorescent crystalline substance that dissolves well in water. Sodium thiosulfate is used in gold mining, water treatment, analytical chemistry, the development of silver-based photographic film and prints, and medicine. The medical uses of sodium thiosulfate include treatment of cyanide poisoning and pityriasis. It is on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines.

What are the chemical properties of sodium thiosulfate ?

1. Sodium thiosulfate lose crystalline water in dry air above 33℃ and decompose into sodium sulfate and sulfur dioxide;

2. Sodium thiosulfate is stable in neutral and alkaline solution and will decompose rapidly in acidic solution, chemical formula:

3. Sodium thiosulfate has strong complexation ability, can form complex with silver bromide, reaction formula:

AgBr + 2 Na2S2O3 + = + NaBr + Na3 Ag (S2O3) 2

According to this property, Sodium thiosulfate can be used to make the photo more texture

What is the solubility of sodium thiosulfate?

Sodium thiosulfate easy soluble in water. Sodium thiosulfate almost insoluble in acetonitrile, ethanol, methanol.

What is sodium thiosulfate used for?

Sodium thiosulfate is used predominantly in industry.

Medical uses

Sodium thiosulfate is used in the treatment of cyanide poisoning.Other uses include topical treatment of ringworm and tinea versicolor, and treating some side effects of hemodialysis  and chemotherapy.

Photographic processing

Silver halides, typical components of photographic emulsions, dissolve upon treatment with aqueous thiosulfate. This application as a photographic fixer was discovered by John Herschel. It is used for both film and photographic paper processing; the sodium thiosulfate is known as a photographic fixer, and is often referred to as 'hypo', from the original chemical name, hyposulphite of soda.

Neutralizing chlorinated water

Sodium thiosulfate is used to dechlorinate tap water including lowering chlorine levels for use in aquariums, swimming pools, and spas and within water treatment plants to treat settled backwash water prior to release into rivers. The reduction reaction is analogous to the iodine reduction reaction.

In pH testing of bleach substances, sodium thiosulfate neutralizes the color-removing effects of bleach and allows one to test the pH of bleach solutions with liquid indicators. The relevant reaction is akin to the iodine reaction: thiosulfate reduces the hypochlorite (active ingredient in bleach) and in so doing becomes oxidized to sulfate. The complete reaction is:

4 NaClO + Na2S2O3 + 2 NaOH → 4 NaCl + 2 Na2SO4 + H2O

Similarly, sodium thiosulfate reacts with bromine, removing the free bromine from solution. Solutions of sodium thiosulfate are commonly used as a precaution in chemistry laboratories when working with bromine and for the safe disposal of bromine, iodine, or other strong oxidizers.

Improve water quality

sodium thiosulfate is rich in available carbon sources, which can promote the growth and reproduction of beneficial bacteria and algae, quickly improve and stabilize pond water quality. Regular use before grazing and in breeding can significantly improve the survival rate and promote the healthy growth of aquaculture animals.

What is the production method of sodium thiosulfate?

On an industrial scale, sodium thiosulfate is produced chiefly from liquid waste products of sodium sulfide or sulfur dye manufacture.

Small scale synthesis is by boiling an aqueous solution of sodium sulfite with sulfur.

As such, the anion S2O32− represents a water-soluble form of elemental sulfur.

sodium thiosulfate production by soda ash solution with sulfur dioxide gas reaction, add caustic soda neutralization, alkali sulfide to remove impurities, filtration, and then sulfur powder dissolved in hot sodium sulfite solution for reaction, through filtration, in addition to impurities, filtration, add caustic soda for alkali treatment, through concentration, filtration, crystallization, centrifugal dehydration, screening, made sodium thiosulfate products, namely sodium thiosulfate.

What is the contemporary use of sodium thiosulfate?

STS has been approved to treat some rare medical conditions. Calciphylaxis is the most prominent. It is a potentially fatal condition resulting from kidney failure, often of unknown cause. Thrombotic lesions develop, especially in the skin. Hopeful results have been obtained through the use of intravenous STS5. It has also been directly applied to dermal lesions in doses of 250 mg/ml with resolution of the lesions over a period of weeks. The success of these treatments is believed to be multifactorial. STS is known to be an anti-calcification agent with vasodilatory and antioxidant properties. Another STS use is to protect against cisplatin toxicity. Cisplatin is one of the most widely used agents to treat solid tumours. It has adverse effects on renal, neurological, gastrointestinal and hematological systems. Toxic overdoses are common. To avoid this problem, STS has been successfully administered with cisplatin.

Efficacy is thought to be related to STS binding to free platinum.Cyanide poisoning is yet another condition where STS has a treatment role. Cyanide poisoning is uncommon but deadly. It can occur in numerous situations. Examples are fires, pest control programs, and gold mining. Combinations of STS and hydroxycobalamin have proved to be effective. The United States has a standard cyanide antidote kit which first uses a small inhaled dose of amyl nitrite, followed by intravenous sodium nitrite, and finally by intravenous sodium thiosulfate.

STS has shown some promise in treating other conditions. Recently STS was demonstrated to function as an anti-inflammatory agent. For example, in acute liver failure induced in mice by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) or LPS/D- Galactosamine, the survival rate was improved by hydrogen sulfide and STS12,13. This at least is partially due to their anti-oxidative functions. STS reacts with GSSG (oxidized glutathione) to produce reduced glutathione in the presence of hydroxyI radicals or peroxides. In addition, STS has a potential to produce hydrogen sulfide by reaction with trans-sulfuration enzymes 14-16.

Can sodium thiosulfate harm you?

You need to use it based on your doctor's prescription. And It has some side effects.Along with its needed effects, a medicine may cause some unwanted effects. Although not all of these side effects may occur, if they do occur they may need medical attention.

Symptoms of overdose

●blurred vision

●hallucinations (seeing, hearing, or feeling things that are not there)

●mental changes

●muscle cramps nausea and vomiting

●pain in the joints

●ringing in the ears

Other side effects not listed may also occur in some patients. If you notice any other effects, check with your healthcare professional.

What is the storage condition for sodium thiosulfate?

Sodium Thiosulfate is usually packaged in 50kg plastic lined compound bags.Sodium Thiosulfate should storage in a cool, dry warehouse, and prevent exposure and rain proof in transportation.Do not be stored and mixed with acids and oxidants.
