Product Description

Dioctyl Terephthalate (DOTP), also known as Bis(2-ethylhexyl) terephthalate or DEHT, is a high-performance, phthalate-free plasticizer designed for flexible PVC and other polymer applications. DOTP serves as a direct, eco-friendly replacement for traditional ortho-phthalate plasticizers like DOP (DEHP) and DINP.   It provides excellent flexibility, thermal stability, low volatility, and superior migration resistance while meeting stringent global regulations for safety and environmental compliance.

DOTP is a colorless, odorless, viscous liquid that integrates seamlessly into PVC formulations, reducing the glass transition temperature and enhancing processability.   Its symmetric para-terephthalate structure contributes to lower volatility and better long-term durability compared to many conventional plasticizers.

Advantages of DOTP Over Traditional Phthalates

Phthalate-Free & Low Toxicity:

No ortho-phthalate content; reduced endocrine disruption risk and lower toxicity profile compared to DOP/DEHP.

Superior Thermal Stability & Low Volatility:

Better heat resistance and significantly lower evaporation loss during processing and end-use.

Excellent Migration Resistance:

Lower migration rates ensure long-term flexibility and prevent surface blooming in finished products.

Improved Cold-Temperature Performance:

Maintains flexibility at low temperatures without brittleness.

Outstanding Electrical Insulation:

Lower dielectric constant and dissipation factor, ideal for wire and cable applications.

Primary Applications of Dioctyl Terephthalate (DOTP)

Wire & Cable Insulation:

High heat resistance up to 70–105°C ratings, low smoke, and excellent electrical properties.

Flooring & Wall Coverings:

Durable, low-migration flexible sheets and tiles.

Automotive Interiors:

Low fogging, odor-free dashboards, door panels, and trim.

Synthetic Leather & Films:

High flexibility, good hand feel, and anti-extraction performance.

Medical Devices & Tubing:

Safer alternative for non-food and select medical-grade flexible PVC.

Toys & Childcare Products:

Compliant with phthalate restrictions for safe consumer goods.

Coatings, Adhesives & Sealants:

Maintains gloss and compatibility in formulations.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q: What is Dioctyl Terephthalate (DOTP)?

A: DOTP is a diester plasticizer produced by esterification of terephthalic acid (or dimethyl terephthalate) with 2-ethylhexanol. It is a non-phthalate compound (CAS 6422-86-2) used primarily to soften PVC and impart flexibility, durability, and processability.

Q: How does DOTP compare to DOP (DEHP)?

A: DOTP outperforms DOP in thermal stability, volatility, migration resistance, and low-temperature flexibility while offering a safer, non-phthalate profile. DOP provides slightly higher plasticizing efficiency in some cases but faces regulatory restrictions due to toxicity concerns.

Q: Is DOTP safe and non-toxic?

A: Yes, DOTP is considered low-toxicity and non-endocrine disrupting. It has no peroxisome proliferation effects seen in some ortho-phthalates and complies with major safety standards for food contact, toys, and medical applications.

Q: What are the main advantages of DOTP in PVC applications?

A: DOTP delivers heat resistance, cold resistance, low volatility, anti-extraction, electrical insulation, and overall durability superior to many traditional plasticizers, making it ideal for high-performance and regulated end-uses.

Q: How should DOTP be stored and handled?

A: Store in tightly closed containers in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from heat, flames, and oxidizing agents.
