Sec-butyl acetate (SBAC), also known as butan-2-yl acetate or 2-butyl acetate, is a clear, colorless and flammable ester solvent with CAS No. 105-46-4. It offers good compatibility with many organic systems and a faster evaporation profile than n-butyl acetate.

Main Applications

Coatings and Lacquers

Sec-butyl acetate is used as a formulation solvent in nitrocellulose lacquers, enamels, industrial coatings and thinners. Its evaporation profile can help balance drying speed, application performance and film formation.

Printing Inks

It may be used in selected solvent-based printing inks where resin compatibility and controlled solvent release are required. Formulation testing is recommended before commercial use.

Chemical Processing

Sec-Butyl Acetate vs N-Butyl Acetate

Sec-butyl acetate and N-Butyl Acetate have the same molecular formula but different molecular structures.

Sec-butyl acetate has a lower boiling point and generally evaporates faster than n-butyl acetate. This can shorten drying time, but it may also change application behavior, film formation and surface appearance.

The two solvents should not automatically be treated as direct replacements. Resin compatibility, drying speed, VOC requirements and final product performance should be tested in the intended formulation.

Packaging and Storage

Sec-butyl acetate is typically supplied in 180 kg steel drums. ISO tank or other bulk packaging options may be discussed depending on order quantity, destination and transport requirements.

Store the product in tightly closed containers in a cool, dry and well-ventilated area. Keep it away from heat, sparks, open flames, direct sunlight and strong oxidizing agents.
