Two suppliers offer potassium permanganate at 99.4% purity, but their prices differ. Which quotation offers better value?
Purity is only one part of the purchase. Product grade, impurity limits, packaging, quantity, delivery terms and payment conditions can all affect the price.
For buyers purchasing stock for resale, the key question is: What will it cost to receive material that meets your customers’ requirements?
A lower price may reflect efficient sourcing. A higher price may include different specifications or services. Price alone does not establish quality.
“99.4% minimum purity” states the minimum KMnO₄ content. It does not describe every impurity, particle size or handling characteristic.
Request the complete specification and a recent Certificate of Analysis, or COA. As a reference, Aozun’s published potassium permanganate specifications include:
Parameter | Specification |
|---|---|
KMnO₄ purity | ≥99.40% |
Water-insoluble matter | ≤0.12% |
Chloride content | ≤0.01% |
Sulfate content | ≤0.05% |
Moisture | ≤0.5% |
These are specification limits. The relevant batch COA should identify the lot and provide the available test results.
Also confirm the grade. Technical, free-flowing and laboratory reagent products may have different requirements. A purity percentage alone does not establish compliance with a particular grade or certification.
Compare the same parameters, units and test methods before treating two offers as equivalent.
Packaging affects receiving, storage and onward delivery. Confirm the net weight per drum, container type, sealing, labels and pallet arrangements—and whether they are included in the price.
If your customers purchase full drums, matching their preferred pack size can simplify stock allocation and reduce extra handling.
For regular orders, also confirm:
Consistency of the manufacturer, grade and agreed specification
Stock availability and production lead time
Batch identification and corresponding COAs
The procedure for reporting quality issues
When evaluating a new supplier, agree on acceptance criteria and record the sample batch number before placing the commercial order.
Check the currency, quantity, delivery terms, named port or place, payment conditions and quotation validity.
An FOB price and a CIF price cover different costs. CIF includes ocean freight and the required insurance to the named destination port, but does not mean delivery to your warehouse.
Illustrative comparison—not current market prices
Assume both offers meet the same specification, packaging and order quantity.
Comparison item | Supplier A | Supplier B |
|---|---|---|
Quoted price | USD 1,700/MT FOB | USD 1,840/MT CIF |
Buyer-added ocean freight and insurance | USD 180/MT | Included |
Comparison subtotal | USD 1,880/MT | USD 1,840/MT |
Supplier A has the lower headline price. After adding freight and insurance, Supplier B is USD 40/MT lower—a difference of USD 800 on a hypothetical 20 MT order.
Add buyer-paid destination charges, import clearance, duties, applicable taxes and inland transport separately to calculate the cost at your warehouse. Avoid counting any expense twice.

No. The difference may come from specifications, packaging, order quantity or delivery terms. Ask the supplier to explain what the quotation includes.
They may differ in impurities, particle size, flowability and dissolution behavior. Equal verified KMnO₄ content provides a similar theoretical amount of active chemical; performance advantages should be supported by relevant testing.
Request the full specification, a recent COA, SDS, packing details and written commercial terms. Confirm the relevant shipment batch documents before dispatch.
For a potassium permanganate quotation, please provide:
Intended application and required specification
Quantity and expected purchasing frequency
Packaging and pallet requirements
Destination, preferred delivery terms and shipment date
Any customer-specific documentation requirements
If you are comparing another offer, include its specification and delivery basis so we can quote on comparable terms.
