Barium sulfate (BaSO₄) is a high-density mineral filler valued for its low water solubility and chemical stability. It is used in coatings, plastics, rubber and drilling fluids, with specialty grades also available for selected ceramic formulations.
A coating manufacturer may prioritize surface finish, while a drilling-fluid producer needs controlled density. Matching the grade to the application is essential.
Barium sulfate is used as an extender and functional filler in industrial paints, primers, powder coatings and other coating systems. Depending on the grade and formulation, it can help control gloss, surface smoothness and pigment distribution.
Fine finishes: Particle size and dispersion influence film smoothness and appearance.
Pigment systems: Selected grades can assist pigment spacing and help maintain color brilliance.
High whiteness does not automatically mean strong hiding power. Barium sulfate is a relatively weak opacifier, so any reduction in titanium dioxide should be assessed through complete-formulation testing, including opacity and durability.
In polymer compounds, barium sulfate supplies weight and can help adjust appearance and processing behavior. Applications include weighted rubber parts, plastic compounds, masterbatches and selected sound-insulating materials.
Density control: Useful where a finished component requires additional mass.
Appearance and processing: Suitable particle size and dispersion can support a consistent surface and finish.
Hardness, strength and flow depend on the polymer, loading and mixing process. Formulation trials establish the balance between weight, appearance and mechanical performance.

Ground barite, the natural mineral form of barium sulfate, is widely used as a drilling-fluid weighting material. Adding it increases fluid density, helping the designed mud system provide the hydrostatic pressure needed for well control.
Relevant material checks include:
Specific gravity: Suitability for the required mud density.
Particle-size distribution: Compatibility with the fluid system and solids-control equipment.
Impurities and consistency: Conformance with the agreed drilling-grade specification.
Pressure control depends on the complete mud system, monitoring and operating procedures; the filler alone does not guarantee drilling safety.
Specialty barium sulfate grades are offered for certain satin or matt glaze formulations. This is a formulation-specific application, with the result determined by the complete glaze composition and firing conditions.
Ceramic trials should check fired color, surface texture and defects. A white raw powder does not guarantee a white fired glaze, and barium sulfate should not be exchanged directly with barium carbonate without recalculating and testing the formulation.
The original source and production route help explain why commercial grades differ.
| Type | Production Route | Important Selection Factors |
|---|---|---|
| Ground natural barite | Mineral beneficiation, grinding and classification | Density, mineral impurities, color and particle-size distribution |
| Precipitated barium sulfate | Precipitation from barium salts and sulfates | Particle size, purity, dispersion and any surface treatment |
The production route alone does not determine suitability. Compare technical data and test samples under the intended processing conditions. Our barium sulfate product page provides a starting point for discussing available material.
Low water solubility does not remove the need to control powder exposure and process waste.
Powder handling: Limit airborne dust and use ventilation, eye protection and other controls specified in the current SDS.
Storage: Keep packaging closed, dry and protected from contamination.
Waste management: Collect spilled powder and manage wash water, filter residues and drilling wastes according to their full composition and applicable requirements.
Not automatically. Confirm the drilling specification, density, particle-size limits and impurity requirements before substitution.
The noncombustibility of the mineral does not establish the fire rating of the finished compound. Any flame-retardant performance must be verified for the complete formulation against the relevant test standard.
Compare costs at the loading needed for the finished-product target. Include consumption per part or unit volume, since barium sulfate's high density affects the mass required.
